History and the Present
On the ground where Germany’s first public library once stood.
now stands a stage platform today´s public life.
Inscribed on the platform is a memorial to the BIBLIOTHECA PUBLICA, whose building was torn down
at the end of the 19th century.
Through their dimensions, the letters of the inscription become signs that one can both read with one’s eyes
as well as decode and pace off with one’s entire body.
The foundations of imaginary spaces open to all, arise from the curves and lines of the text.
The remembrance of the historic location of the Bibliotheca and the utilization of the platform for many
different purposes turn the Annahof into a lively place for the present, a present that is aware of its past.
